Grassroot
Grassroot is a community organizing technology organization creating simple, purpose-built tools to strengthen community-based organizations in low-income and marginalized areas of South Africa. A specific focus is the development of tools used to strengthen citizen participation in local governance processes. Its tools have reached over 70,000 people and been used for over 12,000 meetings, votes, actions and alerts. Grassroot focuses on crossing the ‘digital divide’ by creating tools that are easy to use and work on any phone—smartphone or not, with or without data.

Community Development Resource Association (CDRA)
The CDRA acts as a social facilitator, resource provider and hub for collaborative learning with active community members interested in innovating for progressive social change. Their work seeks to contribute to strengthen the voice, agency, inclusion, leadership, organisation and creativity of people so as to enable them to participate authentically in co-creating society through engagement with others as equals.

OpenUp South Africa
OpenUp is a civic technology lab that uses data and technology to drive social change. It does so by opening up data sources to the public, building an active citizenry by increasing interactions between the public and government, and collaborating with civil society, media, government and techies through community outreach projects and hosting meetings. Open Up supports civil society organisations, government departments, as well as active citizens engaged in sustainable development by filling the technology gap as a means to build an eco-system of socially oriented data consumers and producers within society.

Ikhayalami Development Services
Established in 2006, Ikhayalami aims to develop and implement affordable technical solutions for Informal Settlement Upgrading. Premised on the realization that informality is part of the modern urban fabric, technical solutions are designed to be imbedded into a community-driven process and scaled up with the support of the State. Areas of focus include: research and development, upgrading of shelters, and infrastructural development, amongst others.

The African Centre for Citizenship and Democracy
The African Centre for Citizenship and Democracy (ACCEDE) was established within the School of Government at the University of the Western Cape in September 2007. ACCEDE serves as an organisational and mobilisation space for students and researchers who are involved in activist and research-based policy networks that highlight a critical examination of the factors and policy environments which support or inhibit the development of a more inclusive citizenship in Africa and the global South.
