Roundtable on Local Governance Barometer and Good Governance Survey instruments

On Friday 20 June 2008 representatives of Idasa, Afesis-corplan, GTZ and the GGLN secretariat met to discuss two similar tools aimed at assessing the state of governance at local government level, namely Idasa’s Local Governance Barometer and Afesis-corplan’s Good Governance Survey.

The meeting provided an opportunity for both parties to share the approach and methodology of each respective tool, as well as some of the key findings, lessons and challenges that have emerged through their implementation. The meeting also discussed plans for the future and specifically how other GGLN members can possibly become involved in the implementation of the tools.

It was agreed that Idasa and Afesis-corplan would make an application to the GGLN for funding to convene a larger roundtable to which all GGLN members will be invited, as well as other strategic partners, such as GTZ, the dplg and SALGA. The purpose of this roundtable will be to share the tools with all GGLN members and to look at ways of up scaling implementation through the membership of the network.

Idasa is in the process of concluding a funding arrangement which will see it roll out the Local Governance Barometer to a further 50 municipalities over the coming four years. It is actively requesting GGLN members who are interested in participating in the roll out in their respective regions to get in touch with Idasa.
