Community Law Centre launches Local Government Law of South Africa

The Local Government Project of the Community Law Centre, in association with LexisNexis, launched the Local Government Law of South Africa, a comprehensive new description and critical analysis of local government law. This loose-leaf publication, to be updated annually, was written by two Project members, Nico Steytler and Jaap de Visser and was launched at the Centre for the Book in Cape Town on 29 May 2008.

Fair Share course on Local Economic Development

Local Government and Economic Development Programme Reviving the Entrepreneurial Spirit Fair Share, a unit of School of Government, at the University of the Western Cape is in the process of accepting applications for the Local Economic Development (LED) Programme for 2009. The LED Programme was designed to strengthen the capacity of various stakeholders in local government and communities in the theory and practice of local economic development.

Legislative amendments to scrap floorcrossing

The Constitution Fourteenth Amendment Bill and Constitution Fifteenth Amendment Bill seek to amend the Constitution of South Africa in order to prohibit floor crossing in National, Provincial Legislatures and Municipal Councils.

Planact to enhance public participation in Orlando 2010 Legacy Projects

Orlando, a township within Greater Soweto in the City of Johannesburg, is the site for Orlando Stadium, earmarked as a practice stadium during the 2010 World Cup event. The major initiatives taking place in Orlando include the upgrading of Orlando stadium, and associated infrastructure improvements, along with a backyard shack upgrading project.

Spotlight on Participation Junction

There is a clear need to support the many poor communities who want to participate meaningfully in decisions affecting their lives, and who have something to say about service delivery and the increasing threat to life-sustaining resources. Participation Junction encourages communities to actively hold government to account and also works in support of officials as they adopt new approaches to decision-making, monitoring and service delivery in alignment with the Constitution.

Spotlight on the Built Environment Support Group

The Built Environment Support Group (BESG) was established unofficially in 1983 by a group of academics from the Faculty of Architecture at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, who became involved in defence campaigns to protect the rights of people moving into urban areas due to civil violence and/or the search for employment. It established its first staffed office on Howard College campus in 1985, and a second office in Pietermaritzburg in 1991.
