To Commemorate Women’s month, the Centre for Policy Studies (CPS) cordially invites you to a Seminar on 'GENDER JUSTICE AND TRADITIONAL BELIEF SYSTEMS IN AFRICA' Traditions, customs and culture are increasingly clashing with modern notions of human rights and justice in a globalising world, and Africa is not immune from these tensions between respect for culture and traditions on the one hand, and the need for safeguarding human (and in particular women’s) rights as guaranteed through modern legal and constitutional frameworks in democratic societies. Join the Centre for Policy Studies as we explore and host a thought provoking public seminar on these issues.
Afesis-corplan Upcoming Seminar: Elections 2009 – What's in it for the Eastern Cape?

On 15 August Afesis-corplan, in conjunction with the Project for Conflict Resolution and Development (PCRD), hosted a GGLN-sponsored learning event on the theme of improving pro-poor information dissemination by municipalities.
Community Law Centre launches Local Government Law of South Africa
The Local Government Project of the Community Law Centre, in association with LexisNexis, launched the Local Government Law of South Africa, a comprehensive new description and critical analysis of local government law. This loose-leaf publication, to be updated annually, was written by two Project members, Nico Steytler and Jaap de Visser and was launched at the Centre for the Book in Cape Town on 29 May 2008.
Fair Share course on Local Economic Development
Local Government and Economic Development Programme Reviving the Entrepreneurial Spirit Fair Share, a unit of School of Government, at the University of the Western Cape is in the process of accepting applications for the Local Economic Development (LED) Programme for 2009. The LED Programme was designed to strengthen the capacity of various stakeholders in local government and communities in the theory and practice of local economic development.

Legislative amendments to scrap floorcrossing
The Constitution Fourteenth Amendment Bill and Constitution Fifteenth Amendment Bill seek to amend the Constitution of South Africa in order to prohibit floor crossing in National, Provincial Legislatures and Municipal Councils.
Planact to enhance public participation in Orlando 2010 Legacy Projects
Orlando, a township within Greater Soweto in the City of Johannesburg, is the site for Orlando Stadium, earmarked as a practice stadium during the 2010 World Cup event. The major initiatives taking place in Orlando include the upgrading of Orlando stadium, and associated infrastructure improvements, along with a backyard shack upgrading project.
